PROGRAM: Gomez Mill House: Freedom, Tolerance & Opportunity
The Gomez Mill House in Marlboro is best known as the oldest Jewish dwelling still standing in North America. Visitor Services Coordinator Richard Rosencrans will share much more about the site, where — beginning in 1714 — Luis Moises Gomez and his sons quarried limestone and milled timber for New York City, as well as traded with Native Americans. Later inhabitants, who extended the original fieldstone structure into a handsome home, included Wolfert Acker, a Revolutionary War patriot leader, as well as gentleman-farmer William Henry Armstrong. In the early twentieth-century, noted printer and papermaker, Dard Hunter built a quaint English-style mill on the property, after which feminist-activist-lawyer Martha Gruening attempted to run an integrated private school based on progressive principles. The stories of all these individuals, and others, reflect the history of our region and our nation. Rosencrans will share these stories and also the history of how the house has been interpreted over the years.
